Ask about Dental Sealants to Prevent Tooth Decay
At Shield Dental Care, we take pride in practicing and implementing our philosophy of prevention. A dental sealant prevents tooth decay by filling in the microscopic fissures in the tooth. As a result, you can reduce the chances of cavities growing in those spaces.
What are Dental Sealants?
Bacteria love to grow on grooves (called fissures) on the chewing (occlusal) surface of teeth. Even bristles of a toothbrush cannot reach these spaces deep and narrow fissures. Consequently, plaque accumulates in these areas and over time. The acid and bacteria in the plaque attacks the enamel allowing cavities to develop.
Dental sealants fill in small pits and fissures of the permanent back teeth (molars and premolars) with a composite material, helping to prevent cavities. However, if Dr. Ghorbani determines other teeth at risk for developing tooth decay, he may also apply dental sealants to those teeth as well.
When should you get dental sealants?
Around the ages of 6-14 years, adult teeth are fully erupted beyond the gums. At this time, Dr. Ghorbani applies the sealant to the surface of these teeth to prevent bacteria build up over time. Though traditionally applied at this time, dental sealants can also be a reasonable option later on in life as well. If taken care of properly, dental sealants can provide protection for many years.
How is a dental sealant applied?
Placing a dental sealant is a quick and painless procedure that only takes a few steps. First, the tooth is thoroughly cleaned and dried. Next, a solution preps the surface of the tooth . Lastly, the tooth receives the dental sealant, then hardened using a special light. After that, you are ready to head out knowing your teeth are now better protected against a painful cavity in the future.
